About us
Why we built Bloomwise
A short story about awkward corners, wasted weekends, and the questions that finally helped.
By the Bloomwise team · 6 min read
Every gardener knows the feeling. You stand in the garden centre holding a plant that looks perfect on the label, picture the empty patch by the back fence, and hope for the best. Six months later it has sulked, stretched, scorched or simply vanished — and the patch is empty again.
Bloomwise began with exactly that patch. Between us, we’ve spent years advising friends and family on awkward corners that never quite worked — a north-facing strip beside a shed, a dry bed under a tree, a sunny wall that bakes all afternoon. The answers were never magic. We simply asked the right questions in the right order — how much light, what kind of soil, how much room, how much time do you really have — and the options narrowed until only a handful of good choices were left.
We realised that process could be written down. Not as a generic plant finder with hundreds of filters, but as a calm, guided conversation that does the narrowing for you. That is what Bloomwise is.
Our mission: fewer costly mistakes
A good shrub can cost as much as a meal out, and a climber that never establishes wastes not just money but a whole growing season. Most failures are not down to a lack of green fingers. They happen because the plant and the place were never suited in the first place.
Our mission is to help you buy the right plant the first time. We want you to walk into a nursery, or click “add to basket”, knowing exactly why a plant belongs in your space and what it will need from you. Confidence, not guesswork. We are not here to sell you more plants; we are here to help the ones you choose thrive.
How the decision tree works
Bloomwise asks one question at a time, in the order a good horticulturist would. We start with the things you cannot easily change: where the plant will grow (in the ground, a pot, a raised bed, a greenhouse or indoors), the range of height and spread you want, which way the spot faces, how much sun it gets, whether it sits against a wall or fence, your soil, and how well it drains. These site conditions do the heavy lifting, ruling out anything that would struggle from day one.
Next come your preferences: the colours you love, the style of your garden, whether scent matters, and whether you want evergreen structure or a seasonal show. Then the practical questions — what is already growing nearby, how much time you want to spend on upkeep, and whether pets or children share the space. Finally, you tell us your budget.
Each answer prunes a branch of the tree. Rather than filtering a list one box at a time, Bloomwise weighs your answers together, so a plant that is perfect for the light but wrong for the soil does not slip through. At the end you see just three recommendations, each with a plain-English explanation of why it suits your spot, its light, water and care needs, and an estimated price. If you are unsure about something — your soil type, say — just tell us. We will favour reliable, adaptable plants rather than guess.
The team behind it
We are a small team of horticulturists, botanists and engineers who have each spent years getting our hands dirty — in nurseries, on allotments, and in plant trials. Every plant in our library is checked for hardiness, habit, soil tolerance and household safety before it ever reaches a recommendation. We have one simple rule: we only recommend a plant if we would happily put it in our own gardens.
What you’ll find in Bloomwise
Today the plant library holds {{plantCount}} plants from across the UK garden-centre range: shrubs, roses, perennials, climbers, trees, bulbs, grasses, bedding, houseplants, succulents, and the vegetables, fruit and herbs people grow in raised beds, greenhouses and on the kitchen windowsill. Edible plants come with flavour notes, ways to use them in the kitchen and harvesting tips.
Got a larger space? Our {{pairTotal}} ready-made pairings group five plants that work together, matched on the artist’s colour wheel, layered from a focal point to the front edge, and checked for light, shade, soil and watering. There are pairings for borders, shade, raised beds, greenhouses and windowsills.
We check the facts against accredited sources. Sizes, light, soil, hardiness and flowering times are checked against Royal Horticultural Society plant profiles and growing guides, and every profile shows the source it was checked against. Safety information comes from the Horticultural Trades Association’s Guide to Potentially Harmful Plants, the PDSA and the ASPCA, so you can see at a glance what is safe around children and pets.
Grown for British gardens
Bloomwise is built for the UK climate, from cold, wet clay in the north to dry, chalky borders in the south. Our library favours plants that are reliably hardy here, and we flag those that appreciate a little winter shelter.
The right plant in the right place is also the greener choice. A well-matched plant needs less watering, less feeding and fewer replacements — which means less plastic, less transport and less waste. Where they suit your answers, we favour plants that support pollinators, and we encourage peat-free compost and buying from local nurseries wherever you can. Our recommendations are independent: no supplier pays to appear in your results.
Let’s find your plant
Every garden has a spot that has never quite worked. Ours certainly do. Bloomwise exists so that the next plant you put there is the one that finally feels at home — growing steadily, flowering when it should, and asking no more of you than you are happy to give.
Tell us about your spot, answer a few friendly questions, and within a few minutes you will have three plants you can buy with confidence. We can’t wait to see what you grow.
